Tick-Borne Illness, Hormones, or Thyroid
After 11 years in practice and more than 400 patients, I can tell you the sentence I hear most: "My labs are normal, and I still don't feel like myself." In Pennsylvania, I look at three things when I hear that: hormones, thyroid, and tick-borne illness.
Most people think tick season ends with summer. Here, adult deer ticks are still out in November, and Penn State Extension notes the state consistently ranks first in the country for yearly Lyme disease cases. The symptoms can look a lot like perimenopause or a sluggish thyroid, which is why they get missed.
I put what I look for on one page, so you have a clearer place to start.
Inside the guide:
The clues that point me toward a tick-borne illness, including ones that show up without a rash
How those differ from perimenopause and thyroid symptoms
What I'd look at for each one, so you know what to ask for
Five tick facts every Pennsylvania household should know this fall
What happens next:
Your symptom sorter lands in your inbox within a few minutes. If you live in Pennsylvania, the next step is a free 15-minute call with me. You tell me what you checked, and I'll tell you honestly whether I think I can help and what I'd look at first.
How I help patients:
Tick-borne illness: evaluation and care for Lyme disease and co-infections
Perimenopause and menopause: support for symptoms and hormone changes at every stage
Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT): personalized to your labs, symptoms, and history
Thyroid and functional medicine: fuller lab panels and root-cause care for thyroid, gut, and adrenal health
Medically supervised weight loss: personalized plans rooted in hormonal and metabolic health, with GLP-1 medications where appropriate
*Care is individualized and medically supervised, and results vary.
You are not doing this wrong
Your body has changed, and the approach that worked before may not fit anymore. That is not a failure of discipline. It is physiology, and it can be understood.
From a patient
"Ashly has been fabulous to work with! She was the missing link to my health journey. After many appointments with traditional MDs and feeling absolutely unheard, it was refreshing to meet with someone who genuinely cared. She carefully worked to identify the real triggers for the symptoms I was experiencing and helped me resolve them. I am feeling better today than I have in years." — Debra R.
